چکیده

We develop an abstract model to explore specialization and generalization in task performance by individuals within biological populations. Individuals follow simple rules of increasing and decreasing propensities for tasks that could, for example, be based on learning and forgetting. The model does not explore e ciency per se, but makes the prediction that where behavioural specialization occurs in nature, organisms are likely to be reaping su cient bene ts from improved handling e ciency to o set the costs of increased search time. A second prediction is that among specialists, there will be a trade-o between stability and responsiveness. The model reveals potential similarities between a wide range of complex biological systems.

Assessing ecological specialization of an ant-seed dispersal mutualism through a wide geographic range.

Specialization in species interactions is of central importance for understanding the ecological structure and evolution of plant-animal mutualisms. Most plant-animal mutualisms are facultative and strongly asymmetric. In particular, myrmecochory (seed dispersal by ants) has been regarded as a very generalized interaction. Although some recent studies have suggested that only a few ant species ...

Jumping species—a mechanism for coronavirus persistence and survival

Zoonotic transmission of novel viruses represents a significant threat to global public health and is fueled by globalization, the loss of natural habitats, and exposure to new hosts. For oronaviruses (CoVs), broad diversity exists within bat populations and uniquely positions them to seed future emergence events. In this review, we explore the host and viral dynamics that shape these CoV popul...

Specialization and evolutionary branching within migratory populations.

Understanding the mechanisms that drive specialization and speciation within initially homogeneous populations is a fundamental challenge for evolutionary theory. It is an issue of relevance for significant open questions in biology concerning the generation and maintenance of biodiversity, the origins of reciprocal cooperation, and the efficient division of labor in social or colonial organism...

Optimal Foraging Predicts the Ecology but Not the Evolution of Host Specialization in Bacteriophages

We explore the ability of optimal foraging theory to explain the observation among marine bacteriophages that host range appears to be negatively correlated with host abundance in the local marine environment. We modified Charnov's classic diet composition model to describe the ecological dynamics of the related generalist and specialist bacteriophages phiX174 and G4, and confirmed that special...

Rule Base Inheritance

Abstract We study the transposition of the inheritance mechanism of class-based languages in a forward-chaining rule-based environment. This mechanism allows to specify various levels of organization for a rule base, which represent a notion of generalization/specialization. We show that this mechanism has some interesting practical effects : a conceptual one (the vision of a rule base as a spe...
